Most people asking about wooden flooring in Hyderabad live in a flat with vitrified tiles they don’t want to break. Good news: you almost never have to. Our flooring service in Hyderabad lays engineered wood and laminate as a floating floor straight over sound tiles, and the first question we answer on a home visit is which of the three wood types actually suits each room. Our complete flooring guide for Hyderabad homes puts wood alongside SPC, vinyl and carpet if you’re still choosing.

Laminate is graded for wear by AC rating under the European standard EN 13329. AC3 suits most homes; AC4 is the safer pick for busy living rooms and homes with pets. For a wider comparison including vinyl and SPC, see wooden vs laminate vs vinyl vs SPC flooring.

Cross-sections of solid hardwood at 18 to 20 mm, engineered wood at 10 to 15 mm with a real-wood top layer on a plywood or HDF core, and laminate at 8 or 12 mm
Only solid and engineered wood have real timber on top. Laminate is a printed image under a melamine wear layer, which is why it cannot be refinished.

Which wooden floor suits your Hyderabad home?

New flat in a gated community, bedrooms and living room over vitrified tiles: engineered wood or AC4 laminate, floating. No breaking, no dust from chipping tiles, and you can move in within days.

Villa or independent house, ground floor: we check the slab for damp first. Engineered wood with a proper moisture barrier is usually right. Solid hardwood works where we can build a plywood subfloor and you want a floor that can be sanded many times over the years.

Homes with pets or young children: an AC4 laminate surface shrugs off claws and toy cars better than real wood, but spilt water or juice left in the joints swells it. For a kids’ room that sees spills, wood-look SPC is the safer pick.

Kitchen, utility, bathroom: not wood. In the kitchen, wood-look vinyl and SPC flooring has a waterproof core and handles daily mopping; bathrooms and utility areas that get washed down are best left tiled.

Rooms with large west-facing glass: any wood or wood-look floor fades under strong afternoon sun. Plan blinds or curtains alongside the floor.

Can wooden flooring go over existing tiles?

Yes, in most flats. Three conditions decide it. The tiles must be firmly bonded (we tap each one; hollow ones get fixed first), the floor must be flat within the manufacturer’s tolerance, and the slab must be dry. Grout lines don’t matter under a floating floor on underlay. Expect the floor to rise by about 10 to 15 mm for laminate and up to about 18 mm for thicker engineered boards, so doors are trimmed at the bottom. Our guide on laying flooring over existing tiles explains the checks step by step.

Floating over tiles raises the floor by about 10–15 mm, so doors are trimmed; the skirting hides the expansion gap the floor needs.

How we install wooden flooring

  1. Acclimatise. Boxes sit in the rooms for about 48 hours (or as long as the manufacturer specifies) before opening.
  2. Prepare. Hollow tiles fixed, dips filled with levelling compound, floor swept and vacuumed.
  3. Barrier and underlay. A polyethylene sheet stops moisture rising from the slab; a foam underlay smooths small irregularities and cuts footstep noise.
  4. Lay. Click-lock planks go down in a staggered pattern, with an expansion gap at every wall as the manufacturer specifies.
  5. Profiles. A T-profile at each doorway lets each room’s floor move on its own; reducers and stair nosings where heights change.
  6. Skirting and doors. Skirting covers the expansion gap, and doors are trimmed to clear the new floor.

Skirting choices

Skirting is more than trim; it hides the expansion gap the floor needs. Matching wood-finish skirting looks the most finished. PVC skirting costs less and doesn’t swell when the wall base gets splashed during cleaning, which makes it a sensible pick for homes where the floor near the walls gets wiped often. Painted MDF skirting suits white-walled modern interiors. We show all three with your plank sample.

How long does it take?

A single bedroom is often done in a day. A 2BHK usually takes 2 to 3 days and a full 3BHK 2 to 4 days, plus the 48-hour acclimatisation. Floor repairs found on the home visit add time, and we tell you upfront.

What decides the cost of wooden flooring?

  • Type: laminate, engineered or solid
  • Wood species, top-layer thickness, AC rating, plank size and finish
  • Area, number of rooms and how many cuts (wardrobes, pillars, bay windows)
  • Underlay grade, skirting and profiles
  • Floor preparation and door trimming

Our wooden flooring cost guide explains each factor. You get a room-by-room fixed quote after the home visit.

Caring for wooden floors in Hyderabad

The most common cause of damaged wooden floors we see is wet mopping: a dripping cloth and a bucket, the way tiled floors are washed. Water runs into the joints and the plank edges swell for good. Use a dry mop daily and a well-wrung microfibre mop with a pH-neutral cleaner when needed. Felt pads under furniture, doormats at the entrance for construction grit, and blinds on west-facing glass keep the finish looking new. During the monsoon, close windows when rain is driving in.

  3. Delivery and acclimatisation Boxes are delivered and left in the rooms for about 48 hours so the planks settle to your home's temperature and humidity.
  4. Installation We lay the moisture barrier and underlay, click the planks in a staggered pattern, and leave an expansion gap at every wall.
  5. Finishing and handover Skirting goes on to hide the gap, profiles go in at doorways, doors are trimmed, and we explain how to clean the floor without damaging it.

Frequently asked questions

Which wooden flooring is best for Hyderabad apartments?

For most Hyderabad apartments, engineered wood or a good AC4 laminate laid as a floating floor over the existing tiles is the most practical wooden flooring. Engineered wood has a real wood surface and copes with humidity changes better than solid wood. Laminate is cheaper, harder-wearing on the surface and suits dry bedrooms and rentals. Solid hardwood is best kept for villas and independent houses where a proper plywood subfloor can be built. Kitchens are better in SPC, and bathrooms are best left tiled.

Can wooden flooring be laid over existing tiles?

Yes. Engineered wood and laminate can usually be laid over existing tiles as a floating floor, provided the tiles are firmly bonded, flat and dry. Hollow-sounding or loose tiles must be fixed first, and dips beyond the manufacturer's flatness tolerance need levelling compound. A polyethylene moisture barrier and foam underlay go between the tile and the planks. The new floor adds about 10 to 15 millimetres for laminate and up to about 18 millimetres for thicker engineered boards, so doors are usually trimmed at the bottom.

Is engineered wood better than laminate?

Engineered wood and laminate suit different needs. Engineered wood has a real wood top layer, feels warmer and quieter underfoot, and can be lightly sanded and refinished when the top layer is thick enough. Laminate has a photographic wood image under a hard melamine wear layer, so it resists scratches better and costs less, but it cannot be refinished. Choose engineered wood for living rooms and master bedrooms, and laminate for dry bedrooms, studies and rentals.

Can wooden flooring be used in the kitchen or bathroom?

Wooden flooring is not recommended for bathrooms, and is risky in Indian kitchens where floors are washed and spills are frequent. Water that gets into the joints of laminate or engineered wood makes the edges swell, and the damage is permanent. For kitchens, SPC flooring with a waterproof core is the better choice, and it comes in convincing wood looks; bathrooms and utility areas are best left tiled. Many homes use wooden flooring in bedrooms and living areas and SPC in the kitchen.

How long does wooden flooring installation take?

Wooden flooring installation in a Hyderabad apartment usually takes about two to three days for a 2BHK once the planks have acclimatised. A single bedroom can often be finished in a day, while a full 3BHK takes two to four days, depending on the number of rooms, doorways and cuts around wardrobes. Planks need about 48 hours in the rooms before installation. Floor preparation, such as fixing hollow tiles or levelling dips, adds time and is planned after the home visit.

How do I clean wooden flooring without damaging it?

Clean wooden and laminate floors with a dry mop or vacuum daily, and a well-wrung damp microfibre mop with a pH-neutral cleaner when needed. Never use the traditional wet mopping method with a dripping cloth and a bucket of water, because water seeps into the joints and swells the plank edges. Wipe spills immediately, put felt pads under furniture legs, and keep doormats at entrances, since grit from construction dust scratches the finish.

Does wooden flooring work in Hyderabad's monsoon humidity?

Wooden flooring works in Hyderabad's climate when it's chosen and installed correctly. Engineered wood and laminate move slightly as humidity rises during the June to September monsoon, which is why an expansion gap is left at every wall and a moisture barrier is laid underneath. Problems mostly come from missing expansion gaps, damp ground-floor slabs or wet mopping. Keep windows closed during heavy rain, ventilate on dry days, and the floor will cope with the seasons.

What decides the cost of wooden flooring?

The cost of wooden flooring depends mainly on the type: laminate costs least, engineered wood more, and solid hardwood the most. Within each type, wood species, top-layer thickness, AC rating, plank size and finish change the price. Installation costs depend on area, number of rooms and cuts, underlay grade, skirting and profiles, and floor preparation. Wastage of around five to ten percent is added for cutting. We give a room-by-room fixed quote after the home visit.
