A headboard is the first thing you see when you walk into a bedroom, and the thing your back rests against every night while you read or scroll. Baaft Decor makes custom upholstered headboards in Hyderabad, measured to your bed and wall and fixed at your home. They’re part of our sofa and upholstery services, so the same fabric books, foam options and upholsterers apply, and the fabric and foam advice in our complete sofa upholstery guide holds for headboards too.

A padded headboard does practical work too. It stops hair oil and elbows marking the wall paint, softens the echo in a bare new flat, and gives a plain bed frame a finished look without replacing the bed.

Which headboard design suits your bedroom?

If you read in bed, channel tufting is the style we suggest most often. The padding is even across the whole surface, so no button presses into your shoulder.

Side tables, shelves and lighting

A headboard can extend sideways into floating bedside tables or shelves, and take a concealed LED strip behind the panel or cut-outs for wall lights. All of this needs the switchboard and light points fixed before the panel is built, so we mark them at the home visit. The wiring itself is done by your electrician.

How is a custom headboard built?

Cheap headboards are a thin sheet of foam glued to a board, and they show it within a year: dents where heads rest, wrinkles at the corners. A well-built upholstered headboard has layers:

  1. Base board: 12 to 18 mm plywood (BWR grade if it sits on an exterior wall) or MDF for curved shapes
  2. Foam: 25 to 75 mm of PU foam, thicker for deep buttoning
  3. Polyester wadding: softens the edges and stops the fabric rubbing directly on foam
  4. Fabric: pulled taut and stapled at the back, then closed with a dust cloth

For channels, each channel is padded and wrapped separately. For buttoned designs, holes are drilled through the board and each button is pulled down and tied off at the back.

Each layer has a job: plywood for strength, foam for comfort, wadding to soften the edges, and a French cleat to hold the panel tight to the wall.

Before drilling, we check for concealed electrical conduits behind the bed (switchboards beside the bed usually mean wiring runs nearby) and for monsoon seepage on exterior walls. Newer high-rises often have concrete or AAC block walls, and the anchor type is chosen to suit the wall.

What size headboard do you need?

Indian beds are usually:

  • Queen: about 60 × 78 in (5 × 6½ ft)
  • King: about 72 × 78 in (6 × 6½ ft)

A headboard is normally the bed frame’s outer width plus 2 to 4 in on each side. For height, 4 to 5 ft from the floor leaves at least 2 ft of padding above the mattress. Statement headboards go to 6 or 7 ft, and full-wall panels can run up to the ceiling. Wingbacks and side-table versions need extra width, so check that wardrobe doors and windows still clear.

Size the headboard to the bed frame plus 2–4 in on each side; at 4–5 ft tall it leaves at least 2 ft of padding above the mattress.

Which fabric is best for a headboard?

FabricLookUpkeepHyderabad note
VelvetRich, deep colourBrush along the pileAbsorbs hair oil; choose a deeper shade
BoucléSoft, texturedHard to spot-clean; snagsKeep away from pets and jewellery
LeatheretteSmooth, sleekWipes cleanBest against oil and sweat; can crack in direct sun

Hair oil is the big one in Indian homes. A pale velvet headboard behind someone who oils their hair soon shows a dark patch at head height. The same fabric logic applies to sofas, which our guide to the best sofa fabric for Indian homes covers in detail.

Matching curtains, wallpaper and kids’ rooms

A headboard looks planned when it ties into the room. Use the same or a coordinating fabric for your bedroom curtains and cushions, or set the headboard against a wallpaper feature wall. Our fabric books also cover made-to-measure sofas, so one visit can plan the living room as well. For the rest of the room, from wardrobes to lighting, see our bedroom interior design ideas.

For kids’ rooms, keep corners rounded and the height lower, use wipeable leatherette or a removable zip cover, and wall-mount it securely so it can’t tip if climbed on. Shapes like a house outline or a scalloped top suit younger children and can be swapped later.

How long does it take, and what affects the cost?

Most headboards take about 2 to 3 weeks from fabric sign-off. Full-wall panels and versions with side tables take 3 to 4 weeks. Installation takes a few hours.

The cost depends on the padded area in square feet, design complexity (channels, buttons, wings), foam thickness, fabric grade, the fixing method, and any side tables or lighting cut-outs. You get a fixed, itemised quote after the free home visit.

Cleaning and care

Vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment, especially along channels and around buttons. Blot spills, then use mild soap on a damp cloth; test a hidden spot first and never soak the foam. In the monsoon, air the room daily so the padding doesn’t pick up a musty smell.

  2. Design and quote You approve a drawing with width, height, style, channel or button layout and fabric, plus the fixing method, and receive a fixed quote.
  3. Build The base board is cut to shape, foam and wadding are layered, and the fabric is upholstered, channelled or buttoned and closed at the back.
  4. Installation A concealed cleat is fixed level into the wall (or brackets onto your bed frame), the headboard is hung, and we check that bedside tables and switches still sit and work as planned.

Frequently asked questions

What size headboard do I need for a queen or king bed?

In India a queen bed is usually about 5 ft (60 in) wide and a king about 6 ft (72 in), so a headboard should match the outer width of the bed frame plus around 2 to 4 inches on each side. For height, most upholstered headboards stand 4 to 5 ft from the floor, which leaves at least 2 ft of padding above the mattress to lean against. Statement designs go to 6 or 7 ft, and full-wall panels can run all the way to the ceiling. We measure your actual frame and mattress first, because Indian bed sizes vary.

Is a wall-mounted or bed-attached headboard better?

A wall-mounted headboard is the better choice for most owned homes. It hangs on a concealed cleat, never wobbles or knocks against the wall when you sit up, and lets you pull the bed out for cleaning. A bed-attached headboard suits rented flats or anyone who would rather not drill, because it bolts to the bed frame and moves with it, though the frame must have suitable fixing points. Before wall-mounting, we check for concealed electrical conduits behind the bed and for monsoon dampness on exterior walls.

Which fabric is best for an upholstered headboard?

The best fabric for an upholstered headboard depends on how the bed is used. Leatherette is the easiest to keep clean and handles hair oil and sweat well. Performance polyester weaves resist stains while still looking like fabric. Velvet gives the richest look, especially on channel-tufted or buttoned designs, but it shows crush marks and absorbs oil, so choose a deeper shade. Bouclé is fashionable but snags and is hard to spot-clean. Linen-look blends suit relaxed, airy bedrooms but absorb stains more quickly than the other options.

Can you add an upholstered headboard to my existing bed?

Yes, most existing beds can take a new upholstered headboard. If the bed already has a plain wooden or laminated headboard, there are three options: cover it with a fitted padded panel, wall-mount a taller upholstered panel behind it, or replace it with a new headboard that bolts to the bed frame. For hydraulic storage beds, the headboard is kept clear of the lifting platform. On the free home visit we check the bed's width, height and fixing points and suggest the cleanest option for your room and budget.

How do you clean an upholstered headboard?

Clean an upholstered headboard by vacuuming it once a week with a soft brush attachment, working along the channels and around buttons where dust collects. Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth, then use a little mild soap in water on a damp, not wet, cloth, testing on a hidden spot first. Never soak the fabric, because water that reaches the foam leaves rings and, in monsoon humidity, a musty smell. Wipe leatherette with a damp cloth, brush velvet along the pile, and use a removable cover if hair oil is a daily habit.

How long does it take to make a custom headboard?

A custom upholstered headboard usually takes about two to three weeks from design and fabric sign-off to installation. Simple panelled designs in a readily available fabric are at the quicker end. Deep-buttoned, wingback and full-wall panels, and designs with built-in side tables or lighting cut-outs, take longer, roughly three to four weeks. Imported fabric can add about a week. Installation itself usually takes a few hours on the day of delivery, and the bed can be used the same night.

Are upholstered headboards good for kids' rooms?

Upholstered headboards work well in kids' rooms because the padding softens hard edges and gives children a comfortable surface to lean on while reading in bed. Choose wipeable leatherette or a performance fabric, or ask for a removable zip cover that can be washed, because crayons and juice will find it. Keep the corners rounded and the headboard securely wall-mounted so it cannot tip if a child climbs on it. Playful outlines such as a house shape, clouds or a scalloped top suit younger children and can be replaced as they grow.

Can a full-wall upholstered panel be removed when I move house?

A full-wall upholstered panel can be removed when you move, provided it is planned that way. The wall is made up of separate modules, each on its own board, hung on concealed cleats rather than glued, so the panels lift off and can be refitted in the next home, though the layout may need adjusting to a different wall width. Glued panels are effectively permanent and damage the plaster when pulled off. If you are renting, mention it at the home visit and the fixings are kept few and easy to fill.
