A showroom sells the sofa it has in stock. A custom sofa maker builds the one your room needs. Baaft Decor makes sofas to order across Hyderabad: fixed sofas, L-shapes and sectionals, 3+1+1 sets, and manual or motorised recliner sofas, sized to your wall, your walkway and the people who’ll actually sit on them. (If you already own a solid frame and only want new fabric or foam, our sofa upholstery service is usually the quicker route. Not sure which you need? Our complete sofa upholstery guide walks through repairing, re-covering and building new.)
Why choose a made-to-measure sofa over a showroom sofa set?
Showroom sofa sets come in standard lengths. Your living room doesn’t. A catalogue L-shape that runs 8 ft along the wall leaves an awkward gap on a 9 ft 4 in wall, or blocks the balcony door on a 7 ft 10 in one. With a custom sofa you decide:
- Overall size, to the inch, and which side the L returns. Orientation is described as you face the sofa: left-hand facing or right-hand facing. Get it wrong and nothing fixes it later.
- Seat depth and height. Most sofas have a seat height of 17 to 19 in (43 to 48 cm). A depth of 20 to 21 in suits upright sitting and older parents whose feet should reach the floor; 23 to 25 in suits lounging and taller family members.
- Arm style. Slim track arms free up several inches of seat width compared with rolled or padded arms on the same overall length.
- Foam, fabric, legs and finishing, such as piping, channel stitching or buttoning.
What should a sofa frame be made of?
The frame is the part you never see and the part that decides whether the sofa creaks in year three. A sound custom frame usually mixes materials: hardwood where loads are high, engineered board where flat panels are needed, steel where there’s a mechanism.
| Frame material | Where it’s used | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seasoned hardwood | Base rails, seat rails, legs | Holds joints and screws for years; repairable | Must be properly seasoned and termite-treated; green wood warps in the monsoon |
| Engineered wood (BWR-grade plywood) | Arm boxes, back panels, plinths | Flat, stable, easy to shape | Low-grade particle board swells when damp and loosens screws |
| Metal (MS tube, steel mechanisms) | Recliner mechanisms, some modern frames and legs | Very strong, allows slim profiles | Needs a rust-proof finish; heavier to carry upstairs |
Ground-floor flats and independent houses see more termite trouble, so insist on treated timber there. Under the seat, elastic webbing or zig-zag (sinuous) springs carry the foam; springs give a slightly firmer, bouncier base.
What foam density is right for a sofa seat?
Foam density, measured in kg/m³, mainly tells you how long a cushion will last. Firmness (ILD) tells you how it feels. Two foams of the same density can sit very differently, so we bring samples to test.
| Cushion | Typical spec | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | 32 to 40 kg/m³ PU or HR (high-resilience) foam | Supportive, springs back quickly |
| Seat with soft top | Same base plus a 25 to 30 mm memory-foam or soft layer | Sink-in comfort, still easy to stand up from |
| Back and arms | 20 to 32 kg/m³ foam or fibre fill | Soft to lean into |
Seat foam below about 28 to 30 kg/m³ is a common reason sofas dip within a year or two of daily use. Our sofa foam density guide explains the numbers in more detail.
Which sofa fabric works in Hyderabad homes?
Hyderabad is hard on upholstery: harsh west sun fades colour, construction dust settles into loose weaves, and the monsoon brings months of humidity. Tightly woven polyester and performance fabrics handle all of it best. Velvet looks rich but shows paw marks. Bouclé snags. Leatherette wipes clean but can crack near a sunny window and feels sticky in May. Genuine leather breathes better, though it runs warm without AC.
Compare them side by side in our guide to the best sofa fabric for Indian homes. The same fabric books cover our custom upholstered headboards, so one visit can plan the bedroom too.
L-shape, sectional, 3+1+1 or recliner sofa?
| Layout | Best for | Space notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed L-shape | Living rooms with a clear corner; family TV seating | Orientation is permanent; built in sections to fit lifts |
| Modular sectional | Larger halls and villas; people who rearrange | Modules move separately, easiest to deliver |
| 3+1+1 or 3+2 set | Formal living rooms, guest seating | Pieces can be split across rooms later |
| Recliner sofa (1, 2 or 3 seater) | TV rooms, older parents, home-theatre corners | Needs clearance behind and in front |
| L-shape with recliner ends | Large family rooms | Most comfortable, heaviest build |
L-shapes need the most planning: the chaise side, seat depth and whether the corner seat is actually usable. Our L-shape sofa buying guide covers orientation and sizing.
Manual or motorised recliner sofa?
A manual recliner works with a lever or by pushing back. It has fewer parts and needs no wiring, but it stops at only a few fixed positions. A motorised recliner moves at the press of a button and stops at any angle, which is why older parents and home-theatre users prefer it. It does need a socket within cord reach, and an inverter-backed point is worth planning, because a seat without power can’t return upright during a power cut.
If the sofa backs onto a wall, ask about a wall-hugger mechanism. It slides the seat forward as it reclines, so it needs only a few inches behind it, where a standard recliner needs about a foot or more. Our recliner sofa buying guide covers mechanisms, clearances and seat sizes in more detail. Two-seaters can recline on both seats; three-seaters often recline at the ends with a fixed middle or a storage console, though all three can recline.
Sangeetha, one of our Google reviewers, summed up what matters: “Very happy with my motorised recliner sofa. The build quality is good and the reclining function is smooth and easy to use.”
How long does a custom sofa take?
Typical ranges from design sign-off:
- Fabric sofa or 3+1+1 set: about 3 to 4 weeks
- L-shape or sectional: about 3 to 5 weeks
- Motorised recliner sofa: about 4 to 6 weeks, since mechanisms and motors are sourced per order
Imported fabric or deep buttoning can add a week. Working to a gruhapravesam or handover date? Tell us at the first visit.
Will the sofa fit through the lift and stairs?
This is where sofa deliveries go wrong: a well-built 9 ft sofa that can’t turn the staircase landing. At the home visit we check:
- Lift door width, car depth and the diagonal inside the car
- Main door width, corridor turns and the tightest staircase landing
- Your society’s rules on service-lift booking and delivery hours, which are common in the newer towers of Kokapet and the Financial District
Long sofas and L-shapes are then built as modules that bolt or lock together in your living room, and recliner backs lift off for transport.
What decides the price of a custom sofa?
There’s no single rate, because you choose every input. The cost drivers are:
- Size and seat count
- Frame material
- Foam density and the number of layers
- Fabric grade and metres needed (patterned fabric needs extra for matching)
- Recliner mechanism: manual or motorised, and how many seats recline
- Detailing such as piping, channel stitching, buttoning and leg finish

Caring for a sofa in Hyderabad weather
Keep the sofa out of direct afternoon sun or filter it with sheers. Vacuum weekly when there’s building work nearby. In the monsoon, leave a couple of inches between the sofa and damp exterior walls, and rotate loose seat cushions every few weeks so they wear evenly. With motorised recliners, keep cables clear of the mechanism and don’t let children stand on the footrest.

Frequently asked questions
Do sofa makers come home to measure in Hyderabad?
Yes. Baaft Decor is a doorstep sofa maker in Hyderabad, so you don't need to visit a showroom. On a free home visit we measure the wall where the sofa will sit, the walkway around it, the main door, the lift and any staircase turns. We also bring fabric books and foam samples so you can sit-test and compare them in your own living room light. You then receive a dimensioned design and a fixed quote. Home visits run from 8 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week, and can be booked on WhatsApp at +91 98499 17494.
How long does it take to make a custom sofa?
A custom fabric sofa or 3+1+1 set usually takes about three to four weeks from design sign-off. An L-shape or sectional sofa takes about three to five weeks, and a motorised recliner sofa about four to six weeks, because the mechanisms and motors are sourced for each order. Imported fabric, channel stitching or deep buttoning can add roughly a week. The delivery date is confirmed in your quote, so if you are working towards a gruhapravesam or a flat handover, mention the date at the home visit and the fabric order is planned around it.
Which wood is best for a sofa frame?
Properly seasoned hardwood is the best material for the load-bearing parts of a sofa frame, such as the base rails, seat rails and legs, because it holds joints and screws firmly for years. Engineered wood like BWR-grade plywood works well for arm boxes and back panels, where flat and stable sheets are useful. Avoid sofa frames made entirely of low-grade particle board or unseasoned timber; in Hyderabad's monsoon humidity they swell, warp and start creaking within a few seasons. Recliner sofas add a steel mechanism that is bolted onto the wooden frame.
What foam density is best for a sofa seat?
For a family sofa seat in India, foam of about 32 to 40 kg/m³ density is the usual recommendation, ideally high-resilience (HR) foam, which springs back quickly after you stand up. Backrests and arms can use softer foam of about 20 to 32 kg/m³, or fibre-filled cushions for a sink-in feel. Density mainly decides how long the seat lasts, while firmness (ILD) decides how it feels, so two foams of the same density can sit quite differently. Seat foam below about 28 to 30 kg/m³ tends to dip within a year or two of daily use.
Should I buy a manual or a motorised recliner sofa?
Choose a motorised recliner sofa if older family members will use it every day, if you want to stop at any angle while watching TV, or if pulling a lever is uncomfortable. Choose a manual recliner if it is for occasional use, if there is no power socket near the sofa, or if you prefer fewer parts that can fail. A motorised recliner needs a socket within cord reach, ideally on an inverter-backed circuit, because without power the seat cannot return upright during a power cut. Both types can be made as one-, two- or three-seaters.
Will an L-shape sofa fit in my apartment lift?
A custom L-shape sofa will reach your flat if it is built in sections sized for your lift and staircase, which is how Baaft Decor plans every L-shape. At the home visit we measure the lift door width, the inside depth and diagonal of the lift car, the main door and the corridor turns. The sofa is then made as two or three modules that bolt or lock together in your living room, so no single piece is too long for the lift. Tell us if your society requires service-lift booking or fixed delivery hours.
Which sofa fabric is best for Hyderabad homes with kids and pets?
For Hyderabad homes with children or pets, a tightly woven polyester or performance fabric is usually the most practical sofa fabric. It resists stains, releases construction dust with a quick vacuum and fades more slowly near sunny windows. Velvet looks rich but shows paw marks and needs regular brushing. Bouclé snags easily on claws. Leatherette wipes clean, but it can crack under direct west sun and feels sticky in the summer months. Darker or textured weaves hide everyday marks far better than flat, light colours, so choose those for the main family sofa.
Is a custom-made sofa more expensive than a readymade sofa set?
A custom-made sofa is not automatically more expensive than a readymade sofa set, because the price depends on what goes into it. The main cost drivers are overall size and seat count, frame material, foam density and the number of foam layers, fabric grade, the recliner mechanism (manual or motorised, and how many seats recline) and detailing such as piping, buttoning or channel stitching. Since you choose each of these, you can spend where it matters, such as better seat foam, and save elsewhere. Baaft Decor gives a fixed, itemised quote after the free home visit.
