Most sofas that feel finished aren’t. A seat that swallows you, a frame that creaks or cushions that have gone flat usually point to one failed layer, and that layer can be replaced. Our sofa upholstery and repair team in Hyderabad comes to your home, opens up the problem area and tells you exactly what’s wrong before anything is quoted. If you’d like the background first, our complete sofa upholstery guide explains how frames, foam and fabric fail, and which job each failure needs.

What sofa problems can be repaired?

Almost everything except a frame that has rotted through. This is what we see most often in Hyderabad homes and how each is fixed:

Which repair suits your sofa?

The sofa’s age and build decide the fix more than the symptom does.

Leatherette sofas a few years old are one of the most common repair requests. Cheap PU leatherette often starts peeling within two to four years, and Hyderabad summers above 40 °C, plus afternoon sun through west-facing glass, speed up the breakdown of the PU coating. There’s no patch that holds. The repair is re-covering, and many people switch to fabric at this point (our guide to the best sofa fabric for Indian homes compares the options).

Wooden-frame cushion sofas in older independent houses usually need new webbing and foam. The teak or sal frame is often still sound and worth keeping.

Two-year-old sofas that already sag almost always have low-density foam. Replacing it with the right density usually fixes the sag.

Sofas in ground-floor flats with damp walls get checked underneath for rot and termites before we quote. Spending on foam over a weak frame is wasted money.

How we repair a sofa

Frame and joints

We tighten or re-glue loose joints, add corner blocks where the original had none, and replace cracked rails with seasoned hardwood. Termite-affected sections are cut out and the frame treated before rebuilding.

Springs and webbing

Serpentine (zig-zag) springs that have unhooked are re-clipped, and broken ones replaced. Sofas built on rubber webbing get new webbing stretched to the right tension, which is what stops the “hammock” sag.

Foam and cushion refilling

We go by density, measured in kg per cubic metre, not by thickness. Seats typically take 32 to 40 density foam (high-resilience foam for the seat everyone fights over), backs take softer foam of around 20 to 32 density, and both get a polyester fibre wrap so the cover sits full. Our sofa foam density guide explains the grades in detail.

Fabric, leather and leatherette

Split seams are re-stitched with heavy-duty thread. Torn panels are replaced in a matching fabric where we can source one; otherwise we suggest re-covering the whole face so it doesn’t look patched.

Repair, re-cover or replace?

If the frame is sound, repair. If the frame is sound but the fabric is worn or dated, repair the base and reupholster it in new fabric. Only when the frame is cracked in several places or eaten through does a new sofa make sense. Want a cheaper middle path for a sound sofa with tired fabric? Stitched-to-measure sofa covers can hide it, and our guide on whether to reupholster or buy a new sofa walks through the numbers you should compare.

How long does sofa repair take?

  • Legs, seams, loose arms: 1 to 3 hours at home
  • Cushion refilling: 1 to 2 days (foam is cut to your cushion sizes)
  • Webbing or spring replacement: 2 to 4 working days (the sofa is taken away)
  • Frame repair plus full re-covering: about a week

These are typical ranges. A sofa with several problems, or an unusual shape, can take longer, and we’ll say so on the quote.

What decides the cost of sofa repair?

Depth matters most. A problem in the top layer (seams, cushions) costs less than one in the base (webbing, springs), which costs less than frame work. The other drivers:

  • Number of seats and cushions affected
  • Foam density and brand
  • Fabric or leatherette needed, by the metre, if any panel is re-covered
  • Frame timber, if rails need replacing
  • Whether the work is done at home or the sofa is taken away

You get a fixed, itemised quote after the home inspection.

How to keep a repaired sofa in shape

Rotate and flip loose cushions every couple of weeks so one seat doesn’t take all the load. Don’t sit on the arms (it’s the fastest way to loosen arm joints). Keep the sofa out of direct afternoon sun, or draw a sheer across in the hottest hours.

During the June to September monsoon, pull the sofa a few inches off damp walls and run a fan on humid days so the foam and frame don’t hold moisture. Our monsoon home-care guide covers this in more detail.

How it works

  1. Free home visit Send photos on WhatsApp first if you like. The technician sits on every seat, presses the arms and back, and checks the base for loose joints, slack webbing or unhooked springs.
  2. Diagnosis and fixed quote You get a quote that lists each repair, the foam density and fabric (if any), and whether the work happens in your home or the sofa has to be taken away.
  3. Repair at home Wobbly legs, loose arms, split seams and cushion refilling are normally done in your living room, with a sheet laid down to keep the floor clean.
  4. Repairs that need the sofa opened up Frame re-gluing, rail replacement, new webbing or springs and full re-covering can't be done properly in a living room, so the sofa is taken away and brought back finished.
  5. Sit-test and handover We sit-test every seat with you, check the sofa stands level, and explain how to rotate cushions and protect the fabric so the repair lasts.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sagging sofa be repaired, or do I need a new one?

Most sagging sofas can be repaired. Sagging almost always comes from one of two layers: the foam has lost its density, or the webbing or springs under it have stretched or come unhooked. Both can be replaced without touching the frame or fabric. A new sofa only makes sense when the frame itself is rotten, termite-damaged or cracked in several places. On a free home visit we check which layer has failed and tell you whether repair is worth it before quoting.

Can sofa repair be done at home in Hyderabad?

Yes, many sofa repairs are done at home. Fixing wobbly or broken legs, re-stitching split seams, tightening loose arms and refilling cushions with new foam can all be done in your living room, usually within a few hours. Jobs that need the sofa opened up, such as re-gluing frame joints, replacing webbing or springs, or re-covering the whole sofa, can't be done at home, so the sofa is taken away and brought back finished. The technician tells you which applies after the free home inspection.

How do I know if my sofa needs new foam or new springs?

Press down on the seat with your hand, then lift the cushion if it is removable. If the cushion itself feels soft and collapses but the base underneath is firm, the foam is the problem. If the base dips, feels hollow or you can feel bars or straps giving way, the springs or webbing have failed. Many older sofas need both. A creaking sound when you sit usually points to loose frame joints rather than foam or springs.

Which foam density is right for sofa cushion refilling?

For sofa seat cushions, polyurethane foam of around 32 to 40 kg per cubic metre is the usual range, with high-resilience (HR) foam preferred for seats that get heavy daily use. Backrests are softer, typically around 20 to 32 kg per cubic metre, often wrapped in polyester fibre for a fuller look. Density matters more than thickness: a thick low-density cushion will flatten within a year or two. We confirm the density on the quote so you know what is going in.

Can peeling leatherette (rexine) on a sofa be repaired?

Peeling leatherette cannot be patched in a way that lasts. The PU coating breaks down with heat, body oils and sunlight, and once it starts flaking the rest of the surface follows. The practical repair is re-covering the affected panels or the whole sofa in new material. Many Hyderabad homeowners switch to fabric at this point because it stays cooler in summer. If the frame and foam are sound, re-covering keeps the sofa you like at a lower cost than replacing it.

How long does sofa repair take?

Sofa repair time depends on which part has failed. Leg replacement, seam stitching and loose-arm fixes usually take one to three hours at home. Cushion refilling takes a day or two, because the foam is cut to your cushion sizes. Webbing and spring replacement typically takes two to four working days, because the sofa is taken away for it. A frame repair combined with full re-covering takes about a week. We give you the expected time with the quote.

What does sofa repair cost in Hyderabad?

Sofa repair cost in Hyderabad depends on how deep the problem goes and how many seats are affected. A leg or seam fix costs far less than replacing webbing, which costs less than frame work. Other drivers are the foam density and brand, how much fabric is needed if any panel is re-covered, and whether the job is done at home or the sofa has to be taken away. We give a fixed quote after the free home inspection, so there are no surprises later.

Is it worth repairing an old wooden-frame sofa?

An old sofa with a solid hardwood frame is often worth repairing, sometimes more than a new budget sofa. Many older sofas were built on solid hardwood, while plenty of budget sofas today use softwood or engineered board. If the joints are sound or can be re-glued and there is no termite damage, new webbing, foam and fabric give you a sofa that feels close to new. We check the frame first and tell you plainly if it is not worth the spend.
