Mosquito mesh that actually fits your windows

Most mosquito mesh fails at the edges, not in the middle. A 2 to 3 mm gap where a sliding shutter meets the frame is all a mosquito needs. So we measure every window and door separately, choose a system that suits how that opening is used, and seal the edges properly. We fit mesh for windows, doors and balconies across Hyderabad, from new high-rise flats to older independent houses.

It’s worth doing properly. The mosquitoes that spread dengue bite during the day, and the World Health Organization lists window screens among the basic ways to avoid bites. Mesh is one part of making a balcony and its windows work; our complete balcony and window safety guide covers how it fits with grills, blinds and pigeon nets.

Our guide to the types of mosquito mesh for windows covers each one in more depth.

Mesh materials

  • Fibreglass (PVC-coated): the standard. Rust-free, good airflow, cheap to replace.
  • Polyester: used in pleated systems because it folds cleanly.
  • Pet-resistant mesh: heavier yarn that stands up to claws.
  • Stainless steel: strongest, best for doors with heavy use and homes with pets; slightly less see-through.

Standard insect mesh (around 18×16 strands per inch) keeps mosquitoes out while letting air through. A finer 20 × 20 mesh also blocks midges and sand flies, with slightly less airflow than standard 18 × 16 mesh.

Which mesh suits which opening

Sliding windows in apartments. Many newer flats have two- or three-track aluminium or uPVC sliding windows. A sliding mesh shutter in the spare track is the neatest answer. No spare track? We add one, or fit a roller.

Casement windows and windows with grills. Common in older houses in areas like Secunderabad and in many villas. A fixed or hinged frame on the inside works, positioned so shutters can still close.

Balcony sliding doors. Pleated mesh, because it stops at any width and the bottom track is low enough to step over with a laundry basket.

Kitchen, utility and terrace doors. Magnetic mesh if the door is used constantly, or a hinged mesh door for something sturdier.

Rented flats. Velcro or stick-on magnetic. No drilling, and it comes off when you move.

Homes with cats. Pet mesh or stainless steel on doors and low windows. Cats can claw through ordinary fibreglass surprisingly fast.

Mosquitoes usually get in at two places: where the mesh shutter meets the frame, and where it meets the glass at the interlock. Brush seals close both.

How we fit it, and how long it takes

After the free home visit, we measure each opening at the top, middle and bottom (frames are often a few millimetres out of square). You pick the system, mesh and frame colour, usually white, brown, black or silver to match the window. Fabrication generally takes a few days. Installation for a typical 2BHK or 3BHK takes a few hours to a day, and we check each edge by hand before leaving.

Balcony mesh and gated community rules

Enclosing a whole balcony in mesh panels changes how the building looks from outside, and many Hyderabad gated communities have rules about that. A pleated or hinged mesh door on the inside of the balcony door rarely raises objections. For full enclosures, check with your RWA first; our guide to gated community interior rules explains what is commonly restricted.

One more thing: mesh keeps insects out but it is not a safety barrier. For children and pets on high floors, pair it with invisible grills.

Torn mesh or a sagging frame? Repair before you replace

Not every problem needs a new system. If the aluminium frame is straight and the corners are tight, a torn or faded mesh can often be re-meshed in the same frame. A sliding shutter that sticks usually needs its track cleaned and its rollers checked, not replacing. Replacement makes sense when the frame is bent, the corners have opened up, or the system never suited the opening in the first place (velcro on a door used fifty times a day, for example). We’ll tell you which it is at the visit.

What decides the cost

  • System type: velcro and fixed frames cost least; pleated and roller cost more
  • Size of each opening and the number of openings
  • Mesh material: fibreglass, polyester, pet mesh or stainless steel
  • Frame profile and colour
  • Extra tracks, adaptors or seals for your window type

Care and maintenance

Brush mesh every few weeks, more often if there’s construction nearby. Lift out framed mesh and rinse it. Brush pleated mesh along the folds. Clean tracks and use silicone spray instead of oil, which turns construction dust into grit. Check every seal before June, since mosquito numbers climb fast once the monsoon arrives.

How it works

  1. Free home visit We check each window and door, the frame material (aluminium, uPVC, wood or steel), how it opens, and whether there are grills or a balcony railing in the way.
  2. Measurement per opening Every opening is measured at several points, because frames in many buildings are slightly out of square. Small differences become gaps.
  3. Type, mesh and colour You choose the system per opening, the mesh (fibreglass, polyester, pet mesh or stainless steel) and a frame colour to match your windows.
  4. Fabrication Frames and pleated or roller units are made to size, usually within a few days of confirmation.
  5. Installation and gap check We fit, adjust and seal each unit, then run a hand along every edge to check for gaps before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

Which mosquito mesh is best for sliding windows?

For aluminium or uPVC sliding windows, the best option is usually a sliding mesh shutter that runs in the window's spare track or in an added track next to the glass shutters. It slides open and shut like the glass and stays out of the way. Add brush seals at the meeting points, where most gaps occur. If the window has no spare track, a roller mesh fixed inside the frame is a good alternative. We check track depth during the free home visit.

Are magnetic mosquito nets good for doors?

Magnetic mosquito nets are good for doors that people walk through many times a day, such as kitchen, utility or balcony doors. The mesh is split in the middle and magnets pull it shut behind you, so children and pets can pass without hands. They are affordable and easy to fit, often without drilling. The trade-off is durability: magnets and mesh wear faster than a framed pleated or hinged mesh door, so they suit rented flats or light use best.

Should I choose pleated or sliding mesh for a balcony door?

For a wide balcony sliding door, pleated mesh is usually the better choice. The polyester mesh folds like an accordion into a slim side profile and runs on a very low bottom track, so there is little to trip on and it can be stopped at any width. A framed sliding mesh shutter suits doors with a spare track and is sturdier against pets. Pleated folds collect dust in Hyderabad homes, so they need a quick brush every few weeks.

Can mosquito mesh be fitted without drilling in a rented flat?

Yes. Velcro mosquito mesh uses an adhesive hook-and-loop strip stuck to the window frame, and the mesh presses onto it, so no drilling is needed. Magnetic mesh for windows and doors also comes in stick-on versions. Both can be removed when you move out, though strong adhesive may leave marks on painted wood. They are the least durable options and need re-sticking over time, but they are the practical choice for tenants who cannot alter window frames.

Is fibreglass or stainless steel mosquito mesh better?

Fibreglass mesh, usually PVC-coated, is the standard choice for most homes: it does not rust, gives good airflow and visibility, and is cheaper to replace. Stainless steel mesh is stronger and resists tearing from cats, dogs and accidental pushes, and it holds up better on doors with heavy use. It costs more and is slightly less see-through. For homes with pets, a dedicated pet-resistant mesh or stainless steel is worth it on doors and low windows.

How do I clean mosquito mesh in a dusty area?

Clean mosquito mesh with a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment every two to four weeks, then wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Framed sliding and hinged meshes can be lifted out and rinsed. Brush pleated mesh along the folds rather than across them. Clean the tracks too, and use a silicone spray rather than oil, because oil traps Hyderabad's fine construction dust and makes sliding stiff. Check edges and seals before the monsoon.

Is balcony mosquito mesh allowed in gated communities?

It depends on your community's rules. Many Hyderabad gated communities restrict changes that alter the building's outer appearance, which can include enclosing a balcony with mesh panels. A pleated or hinged mesh door fitted on the inside of the balcony door usually does not change the facade and is rarely an issue. For a full balcony enclosure, check with your RWA or facility manager first, and ask whether a specific frame colour is required.

What decides the cost of mosquito mesh?

Mosquito mesh cost depends on the system (velcro, magnetic, fixed frame, sliding, roller or pleated), the size of each window or door, the mesh material (fibreglass, polyester, pet mesh or stainless steel), the frame profile and colour, and whether extra tracks, seals or adaptors are needed for your window type. Pleated and roller units cost more than fixed frames and velcro. Baaft Decor gives a fixed quote after measuring each opening during a free home visit.
