A door curtain sounds like the simplest buy in the house. But a main door, a sliding balcony door and a kitchen doorway each ask for something completely different, and the common mistake is to buy the same 7 ft ready-made panel for all three. We make and fit custom curtains in Hyderabad for doors of every kind, and the questions below are the ones we ask on every visit.

This guide is a spoke of our curtains buying guide for Hyderabad homes, which covers fabrics, linings, hardware and cost. Here we go door by door.

Main door curtains

In most Hyderabad flats, the main door has a safety grille door outside it. On a pleasant evening, families leave the wooden door open for cross-ventilation and keep the grille locked. A curtain on the inside gives privacy from the corridor without shutting out the breeze. That’s the real job of a main door curtain.

Go for a mid-weight fabric with a lining, so it doesn’t turn translucent when the corridor lights are on. Darker colours or a woven pattern hide the hand marks that build up where everyone pushes the curtain aside. Tie it back during the day with a holder at about hand height.

Hardware needs a little thought. The door swings inward, so the curtain has to be either high enough and wide enough that the door clears it, or fitted on a swing-arm rod. The traditional portière was often fixed on a brass arm that moved with the door, and swing-arm rods still work the same way today. Leave room for any toran or nameplate above the frame.

Balcony and sliding door curtains

Sliding balcony doors are the widest openings in most apartments and the ones used most often, so they get the most careful planning.

Use a double track. A sheer in front for daytime privacy and a dim-out or blackout layer for the afternoon sun. On west-facing balconies in areas like Kondapur or Narsingi, that second layer is what keeps the hall bearable in May. Our blackout vs sheer vs dim-out guide explains which lining does what.

Stack to one side. Run the track 20 to 25 cm past the opening on the side the curtain stacks, so the fabric clears the glass completely. If the door slides only one way, a one-way draw that stacks on the opposite side keeps the walkway clear.

Clear the handle. Sliding door handles stick out further than window handles. The bracket projection has to keep the curtain off the handle, or the fabric wears through at that spot.

Plan for wind. On high floors, an open balcony door can pull a light curtain outside or slam it about. Magnetic holders on each side, and weighted hems on sheers, keep things under control.

Run the track 20 to 25 cm past the opening on the stacking side so the fabric clears the glass. On a door that slides one way, stack everything on the fixed side.

If mosquitoes are the bigger problem on that door, a pleated or sliding mesh fitted in the door frame, with the curtain in front of it, works well. Our guide to types of mosquito mesh compares the options for balcony doors.

Kitchen door curtains

Plenty of Hyderabad flats have an open kitchen doorway with no door at all. A curtain there hides the working mess from the living room and holds back some cooking smell.

Use a washable polyester or poly-cotton, because the fabric will absorb oil and tadka smoke and needs frequent washing. Keep it short, or tied back while cooking, and make sure it can never swing towards the gas hob. A spring tension rod inside the frame, or a slim track above it, is enough.

For a utility door that’s used all day, a hinged mesh door with a closer is often more useful than fabric.

Curtains for wardrobe openings and store niches

An open wardrobe, a loft niche or a store alcove can be closed with a curtain instead of shutters. It’s a good option in a rented flat or while you’re saving up for proper wardrobes.

Use a ceiling-mounted track so the curtain runs from ceiling to floor and dust can’t settle over the top. A tightly woven, mid-weight fabric keeps more dust out than a sheer. Ripple fold on a ceiling track looks neat and stacks compactly when open. If you later want permanent shutters, the same opening can be fitted with a proper wardrobe.

Beaded, PVC strip and magnetic door curtains

These are usually bought ready-made rather than stitched, and each makes sense in a narrow set of places.

Beaded curtains mark a doorway, let air through and look playful. They suit a utility passage, a dining-to-kitchen opening or a child’s room door. They give little privacy, rattle every time someone walks through and collect dust. Keep them away from toddlers, since loose beads are a choking risk.

PVC strip curtains, often sold as “AC door curtains”, are overlapping clear strips that people walk straight through. They help hold cool air in a room whose door is opened constantly, which is why shops and clinics use them. At home they suit a home office or a busy utility area, but they look commercial, scuff and cloud with time, and give no privacy.

Magnetic mesh curtains split down the middle and snap shut behind you. They’re a mosquito solution, not a privacy one, and work best on kitchen and balcony doors in rented homes where drilling isn’t allowed.

Privacy, light and airflow

Every door curtain balances three things. A sheer gives daytime privacy and lets air and light through, but goes see-through at night when the lights are on. A dim-out lined curtain gives privacy at all hours and still lets some light around the edges. A blackout curtain blocks almost everything, which suits a bedroom balcony door but can make a hall gloomy.

For most balcony doors, the sheer-plus-dim-out pair covers all three needs: sheer by day, dim-out at night, both open when you want the breeze.

Door curtain sizes and hanging height

Ready-made door curtains are usually sold about 7 ft long for standard doors and 9 ft for long doors, with panels around 4 ft wide. Measured curtains fit better. Fix the rod 10 to 15 cm above the frame, or at the ceiling, extend it 15 to 20 cm past each side, and finish the curtain 1 to 2 cm above the floor so it doesn’t drag dust. Our guide on how to measure windows for curtains walks through fullness and panel counts, and the curtain rods and tracks guide helps choose the hardware for each door.

Frequently asked questions

What size curtain do I need for a door?

Ready-made door curtains in India are usually sold about 7 ft long for standard doors and 9 ft for long doors and tall windows, with each panel commonly around 4 ft wide. For a good fit, measure from the rod or track position down to 1 to 2 cm above the floor, and make the rod 15 to 20 cm wider than the door frame on each side. Multiply the rod length by 1.5 to 2.5, depending on the heading, to get the total fabric width.

Which curtain is best for a main door?

The best curtain for a main door in an Indian flat is a mid-weight, lined fabric that gives privacy when the wooden door is open and only the safety grille is shut. Hang it on a sturdy rod or track fixed high enough to clear the door's swing, extended past the frame so the fabric stacks off the opening. A tie-back or magnetic holder keeps it out of the way, and a darker or patterned fabric hides the fingermarks a main door curtain inevitably collects.

What curtains are best for sliding balcony doors?

Sliding balcony doors are best dressed with a double track holding a sheer and a heavier dim-out or blackout curtain, fixed at or near the ceiling. Extend the track 20 to 25 cm past the opening on the side the curtain stacks so the fabric clears the glass completely. If the door slides only one way, a one-way draw curtain that stacks on the opposite side keeps the path clear. On high floors, magnetic holders stop wind from pulling the curtain outside.

Are beaded door curtains a good idea?

Beaded door curtains are a good idea where you want to mark a doorway, let air through and keep a bit of visual separation, such as a utility passage, a kid's room or a dining-to-kitchen opening. They give little privacy, they rattle when people walk through, they collect dust in a city with constant construction, and small loose beads are a choking risk for toddlers. For bedrooms and main doors, a fabric curtain is usually the more practical choice.

What is an AC door curtain?

An AC door curtain usually means a strip curtain made of overlapping clear PVC strips hung across a doorway, so people can walk through while less cool air escapes from an air-conditioned room. They are common in shops, clinics, server rooms and cold rooms, and some homes use them for a home office or a utility area. They look commercial, scuff and cloud over time, and give no privacy, so in most homes a lined fabric curtain or a door closer is a better fit.

How do I hang a curtain on a door that opens inward?

To hang a curtain on a door that opens inward, fix the rod or track high enough above the frame that the door clears the curtain when it swings, and extend it well past the hinge side so the fabric can stack against the wall. Another option is a swing-arm or portière rod, which is fixed beside the frame and swings with the door. For glazed French doors, a sash rod at top and bottom holds a fabric panel flat against the glass.

Is a curtain a good idea for a kitchen doorway?

A curtain can work well for an open kitchen doorway if it's chosen for the job. Use a washable polyester or poly-cotton fabric that releases oil and smells in the wash, keep it short or tied back, and never let it hang near the gas hob, where a draught can blow fabric towards the flame. A tension rod or slim track is enough. If you only want to keep insects out, a magnetic mosquito mesh curtain or a hinged mesh door does that job better.
