In Hyderabad, “sofa cover change” means two different jobs, and it helps to know which one you need before calling anyone. One is a removable cover stitched to fit over your existing sofa. The other is a permanent fabric change, where the old fabric is stripped and new fabric stapled to the frame. This page covers the first. For the second, see our sofa upholstery service in Hyderabad, and for how covers, repairs and reupholstery compare, read our complete sofa upholstery guide.
Stitched covers are the right call when the sofa still feels good to sit on but looks tired, stained or out of place after a repaint. They’re also worth it on a new light-coloured sofa you want to keep new, or in a rented flat where you’d rather not spend on upholstery.
Which type of sofa cover do you need?
| Cover type | How it fits | Best for | Washable | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-made stretch cover | Elastic fabric pulled over the sofa | Rentals, quick fixes, plain box shapes | Machine wash | Slides, bunches at corners, rarely fits L-shapes or recliners |
| Tailored removable cover | Cut panel by panel, zips or Velcro, optional piping | Families, pets, light colours, any shape | Yes, depends on fabric | Needs measuring and stitching time |
| Cushion covers only | Zipped covers for loose seat and back cushions | Wooden, cane and diwan-style sofas | Yes | Frame stays exposed |
| Fixed fabric change | New fabric stapled to the frame | Permanent new look, sofas needing new foam | Spot clean only | Longer job, see upholstery |
Our guide to sofa cover types goes deeper on fitted versus stretch covers.
When a new cover won’t fix the problem
Sit down before you order covers. If the seat sinks, the frame creaks or one arm moves when you lean on it, a cover only hides the problem for a few weeks; the fabric then stretches into the dip and looks worse than before. Fix the base first with our doorstep sofa repair service, then cover it. We check this on the home visit anyway, and we’ll tell you if the foam needs refilling before we cut any fabric.
Which fabric works for sofa covers in Hyderabad?
Covers get washed, so the fabric has to survive the machine as well as the sofa.
- Cotton canvas and cotton blends: coolest to sit on from April to June, washes well, fades in direct sun. Cotton shrinks, so it should be pre-washed before it’s cut.
- Polyester suede-finish and velvet-type fabrics: hold colour, wipe clean, and forgive children and pets. Velvet does pick up pet hair.
- Chenille and jacquard: textured, hides wear and crumbs, but mostly dry clean only.
- Performance fabrics: treated polyester that resists spills. Worth it for cream or beige covers.
We steer people away from leatherette covers. It’s hot through a Hyderabad summer, can’t go in a machine and peels. For more on this, read which sofa fabric lasts in Indian homes.
L-shape, sectional and recliner sofa covers
These are the shapes where ready-made covers fail.
L-shape and sectional sofas. We cover each module separately: the straight runs, the corner seat and the chaise. The corner gets its own panel so the fabric doesn’t stretch diagonally and pull. You can wash one section at a time.
Recliner sofas. The cover is split into backrest, seat and footrest pieces with openings for the lever or power buttons. We add slack at the footrest fold so nothing strains when you recline. If the recliner is already stiff or not closing, get it fixed through our recliner repair service first; a new cover on a broken mechanism tears at the hinge.
Wooden sofas. Zipped covers for each cushion, sized exactly, with piping for a crisp edge. If the cushions have flattened, we can refill them at the same time.
How we measure and stitch sofa covers
We don’t work from “3-seater”. Two 3-seaters can differ by a foot in width and have completely different arms. Each surface is measured on its own: outside arm, inside arm, arm front, back, seat deck, and every cushion’s length, width and depth. Rolled or curved arms get a paper template traced on the sofa.
Panels are then cut to the template with seam allowance, stitched with lock-stitched seams, and finished with piping where you want definition. Zips go along the back or underside where they won’t be seen.
How long does it take?
The measuring visit takes under an hour for a standard set. Stitching usually takes 5 to 8 working days, longer for L-shapes, recliners, quilting or a fabric we have to order in. Fitting at home takes one to two hours.
What decides the cost of sofa covers?
- Number of seats, modules and loose cushions
- Shape: L-shapes, recliners and curved arms take more fabric and cutting time
- Fabric grade and how many metres your sofa needs
- Details such as piping, skirts, quilting or contrast panels
You get a fixed, itemised quote after the home visit, once every panel has been measured.
Caring for stitched sofa covers
Close all zips before washing. Use a gentle cold cycle for cotton and polyester, and wash the whole set together so the colour ages evenly. Dry in the shade, not on the terrace in full sun. Put cotton covers back on while slightly damp so they settle to the shape. Rotate seat cushions so one seat doesn’t fade or stretch faster than the others.

How it works
- Free home visit with samples We bring cotton, velvet, suede-finish, chenille and performance fabric samples and look at them against your walls, floor and curtains.
- Panel-by-panel measurement Arms, inside arms, back, seat deck and each cushion are measured separately. Curved arms and chaise ends get a paper template.
- Fabric and style confirmed You choose the fabric, piping, skirt or no skirt, and where the zips go. The quote lists the fabric quantity in metres.
- Cutting and stitching Covers are cut from your template and stitched with lock-stitched seams and piping where you want definition, then brought back finished for fitting.
- Fitting at home We put the covers on, tuck and smooth them, and adjust any panel that sits loose. You get care instructions for your fabric.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between sofa cover stitching and sofa fabric change?
Sofa cover stitching makes a removable cover that goes over your existing sofa, held with zips, Velcro or tucks, and comes off for washing. A sofa fabric change, also called reupholstery, strips the old fabric off the frame and staples new fabric on permanently, often with new foam. Stitched covers are quicker and cost less, and suit sofas whose foam and frame are still good. Reupholstery suits sofas that need new padding or a fully fixed, tailored finish.
Can you stitch covers for an L-shape sofa?
Yes. For an L-shape or sectional sofa we stitch the cover in sections that match the modules: each straight run, the corner seat and the chaise are covered separately, along with every seat and back cushion. This keeps the fit tight at the corner, where one-piece stretch covers always bunch, and lets you remove and wash one section at a time. We measure each module on the home visit and make paper templates for any curved or angled ends.
Can recliner sofas have fitted covers?
Recliner sofas can have fitted covers, but they must be split so the mechanism still works. We stitch separate pieces for the backrest, seat and footrest, leave openings for the lever or power buttons, and add enough slack at the footrest fold so the cover doesn't strain when you recline. A single wrap-around cover would block the mechanism or tear at the hinge. If the recliner itself is stiff or broken, have it repaired before covering it.
Which fabric is best for sofa covers in Hyderabad?
For removable sofa covers in Hyderabad, cotton canvas and cotton blends are the coolest in summer and wash well, but the fabric should be pre-washed before cutting because cotton shrinks. Polyester suede-finish and velvet-type fabrics resist fading and stains and suit homes with children. Chenille and jacquard hide wear but usually need dry cleaning. We don't recommend leatherette for covers because it gets hot, can't be machine-washed and tends to peel. The right choice depends on sunlight, pets and how often you plan to wash.
Are custom sofa covers better than stretchable sofa covers?
Custom sofa covers fit better and last longer than ready-made stretchable covers, especially on L-shapes, recliners, curved arms and wooden sofas. Stretch covers are cut for an average shape, so they slide when you sit, bunch at the corners and show the outline of the arms. Tailored covers are cut to your sofa's measurements and hold their shape. Stretch covers still make sense for a rented flat or a short-term fix where fit matters less than speed.
How long does sofa cover stitching take?
Sofa cover stitching usually takes about five to eight working days from the home visit to fitting. The measuring visit takes under an hour for a standard sofa set. Cutting and stitching takes most of the time, and depends on the number of seats, whether the sofa is an L-shape or recliner, and details like piping or quilting. The final fitting at home takes one to two hours. Fabric availability can add a few days.
Can sofa covers be washed in a washing machine?
Most cotton, cotton-blend and polyester sofa covers can be machine-washed on a gentle cold cycle with the zips closed. Wash all the covers together so the colour stays even, and dry them in the shade, because Hyderabad sun fades fabric quickly. Put cotton covers back on while slightly damp so they settle to shape. Velvet, chenille, jacquard and anything with a backing should be dry cleaned. We tell you the washing method for your fabric at handover.
Do you stitch cushion covers for wooden sofas?
Yes. Wooden and cane sofas usually have loose seat and back cushions, and we stitch zipped covers for each cushion to its exact size, with piping if you want a sharper edge. If the cushions have gone flat, we can replace the foam at the same time so the new covers sit full. For wooden diwans and benches we also stitch fitted mattress-style covers. The wooden frame stays exposed, so we can suggest fabric that suits the wood tone.
