A recliner that won’t recline is almost never a lost cause. Very often the frame and mechanism are fine and one inexpensive part has failed: a stretched cable, a dead power adapter, a loose bolt. Recliner work is part of our sofa upholstery and repair service in Hyderabad, and it starts with finding that part rather than guessing. Our complete sofa upholstery guide puts recliners alongside the other sofa jobs if you’re weighing repair against re-covering.

Manual and motorised recliners: how the repair differs

Manual recliners work on a steel scissor linkage. Pulling the handle tugs a cable that releases a catch, your body weight tips the back, and the footrest swings out on linkage arms. Most faults are mechanical and visible once the chair is tipped forward: a cable that’s lost tension, a spring that’s snapped, a bolt that’s walked loose.

Motorised (power) recliners replace the cable and catch with a linear actuator, a motor that pushes a rod in and out. It runs on low-voltage DC, usually 24 to 29 V, supplied by a plug-in adapter, and a switch panel on the side controls it. The motor is the expensive part, but it’s rarely the first to fail. Adapters, switches and the cables between sofa sections fail more often.

Check these before you call

  • Is the plug fully in, and is the adapter’s light on?
  • On a recliner sofa, are the connectors between sections still joined? Moving the sofa to clean often pulls them apart.
  • Is anything stuck under the footrest? Toys, remotes and phone chargers jam a lot of mechanisms.

If those are fine, unplug the recliner and call us. Don’t open the adapter; its input side runs on mains power.

Repair or replace the mechanism?

We repair when the steel is straight and the pivots are tight. When a linkage arm is cracked or the mechanism plate is bent, we replace that side’s mechanism, matched to the original’s mounting points and footrest reach. For actuators, we match the stroke length and connector. If the original brand’s part isn’t sold separately, we source a compatible one and tell you so on the quote.

When isn’t a recliner worth repairing?

When the frame around the mechanism mounts is particle board that has split, the mechanism has nothing solid to bolt to. A single torn mount can often be reinforced with a hardwood block. If several mounts have pulled out, we’ll say so plainly, and you can weigh the repair against a new recliner before spending anything. If you do replace it, our recliner sofa buying guide covers mechanisms, wall clearance and seat sizes.

Recliner re-covering

Recliners peel faster than ordinary sofas. Body heat and sweat sit on the seat and arms for hours, and leatherette’s PU coating breaks down under it, especially in rooms that heat up through west-facing windows. We re-cover in leatherette, fabric or leather, with extra allowance at the footrest fold and back hinge so the new cover doesn’t pull when you recline. Prefer to keep the old cover and protect it? We also stitch fitted recliner covers split around the mechanism.

How long does recliner repair take?

  • Cable, handle, adapter, switch, bolt-up: 1 to 2 hours at home
  • Mechanism or actuator replacement: 2 to 5 days, depending on the part
  • Re-covering: 5 to 8 working days (the recliner is taken away and brought back)

What decides the cost of a recliner repair?

  • Manual or motorised, and which part has failed
  • Whether the part is a common fit or brand-specific
  • Number of reclining seats in a recliner sofa
  • Re-covering material and quantity, if needed
  • Whether the repair is done at home or the recliner has to be taken away

How to make a recliner last

Close the footrest with your legs, not by sitting on it. Don’t let children stand or bounce on an open footrest; it’s the most common reason linkage arms bend. Leave a little space behind wall-hugger models so the back doesn’t strike the wall. For motorised recliners, plug the adapter into a surge-protected point, since monsoon thunderstorms can bring voltage fluctuations, and keep cables away from the moving mechanism.

We cover all of Hyderabad, including Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet, Kukatpally and Banjara Hills. Other sofa problems, such as a sagging seat or a loose frame, are covered by our sofa repair service.

Send a short video of the recliner to +91 98499 17494 on WhatsApp, or book a free home inspection, and we’ll tell you which part has failed and what it takes to fix.

How it works

  1. Tell us the symptom WhatsApp a short video of the recliner trying to move. A clip of the noise or the stuck footrest often tells us which part to bring.
  2. Free home inspection The technician tips the recliner forward, checks the linkage, cable, springs and bolts, and on motorised units tests the adapter, switch and actuator.
  3. Fixed quote You get a quote naming the part to repair or replace, whether it's done at home, and how long a part takes to arrive if it isn't in stock.
  4. Repair Cables, handles, adapters, switches and bolt-ups are done at home. Some mechanism swaps and all re-covering can't be done in a living room, so the recliner is taken away and brought back finished.
  5. Test and handover We run the recliner through full cycles with you, check both sides move evenly, and show you what to avoid so it doesn't recur.

Frequently asked questions

Can a recliner be repaired at home?

Most recliner repairs can be done at home. Replacing a release cable or handle, tightening loose mechanism bolts, swapping a faulty power adapter or switch, and freeing a jammed footrest are all done on site, usually within a couple of hours. Jobs that need the upholstery removed, such as replacing a full mechanism side on some models or re-covering peeling leatherette, can't be done properly at home, so the recliner is taken away and brought back finished. After the free inspection we tell you which applies before quoting.

Why has my power recliner stopped working?

When a power recliner stops completely, the cause is most often in the power path rather than the motor. Check that the plug is fully in, that the adapter's light is on, and that the connectors between sofa sections haven't pulled apart. A failed power adapter, a broken switch or a damaged cable under the seat are the next most common faults. If the motor hums or grinds but the seat doesn't move, the actuator or an obstruction is likely. Unplug before checking underneath.

Why won't my recliner footrest close?

A recliner footrest that won't close is usually caused by a bent or worn linkage arm, a broken return spring, loose mechanism bolts, or something caught in the mechanism, such as a toy or remote. On manual recliners the footrest normally closes with firm leg pressure; if it doesn't, the mechanism needs attention. Forcing it by sitting or standing on the footrest bends the arms further. We inspect the mechanism from below and repair or replace the damaged parts.

Can you replace a recliner motor?

Yes. A motorised recliner uses a linear actuator, and a failed actuator can be replaced. The replacement has to match the original's stroke length, mounting points and connector, so we note those details on the inspection visit. When the original brand's part isn't available, we source a compatible actuator. Before replacing a motor we always test the power adapter and switch, because those cheaper parts fail more often and produce the same symptom of a recliner that won't move.

What is the average lifespan of a recliner?

Recliners are commonly estimated to last around 7 to 15 years, but a recliner's lifespan depends far more on how it's used and built than on age alone. The steel mechanism usually outlasts the foam and upholstery; leatherette covers in particular often peel within a few years in hot rooms, while the mechanism keeps working. Recliners that get stood on, rocked hard or used as a step wear their linkage fastest. Cables, adapters, switches and foam are replaceable parts, so a recliner on a sound frame can usually keep going.

Can peeling leather on a recliner be repaired?

Peeling on a recliner is almost always leatherette (PU-coated fabric), not genuine leather, and it can't be patched in a lasting way. The repair is re-covering the affected panels, or the whole recliner, in new leatherette, fabric or leather. Recliner panels need extra stretch allowance at the footrest and back hinge so the cover doesn't strain when reclining. Genuine leather that has cracked can sometimes be conditioned and recoloured instead. We assess which option fits on the home visit.

Do you repair recliners of all brands?

We work on most recliner brands sold in Hyderabad, imported or made in India, manual or motorised. Mechanisms and actuators follow a handful of common designs, so cables, handles, springs, bolts, adapters and switches are usually available or have compatible equivalents. Some brand-specific actuators or control boards take longer to source. If your recliner is still under the seller's warranty, check with the seller first, because outside repairs can affect that cover.

How long does recliner repair take?

Simple recliner repairs, such as a new release cable, handle, power adapter or switch, or tightening the mechanism, are usually finished in one to two hours at home, sometimes on the inspection visit itself if we carry the part. Mechanism or actuator replacement typically takes two to five days, depending on how quickly the matching part arrives. Re-covering a recliner in new material takes about five to eight working days, since it is taken away for the work. You get the timeline with the quote.
