L-Shape Sofa Buying Guide: Size, Chaise Side, Comfort and Delivery

Grey fabric L-shaped sofa with a long chaise, adjustable headrests and a low coffee table in a living room

An L shape sofa is the single biggest piece of furniture in most living rooms, and it’s also the easiest one to get wrong. Order the chaise on the wrong side, or a few inches too long, and nothing fixes it later. We build custom L shape sofas in Hyderabad to the room, so this guide covers what we measure and check before any frame gets built.

It’s one part of our sofa and upholstery guide for Hyderabad homes, which covers fabric, foam, repair and reupholstery. Here the focus is buying an L shape that fits your room, your family and your lift.

Will an L shape sofa fit your living room?

Start with a tape measure and a rough floor plan. Note:

  • The length of both walls the sofa will sit against, measured from the corner.
  • Windows, switchboards, AC units and skirting along those walls.
  • The balcony door, main door and any passage, with the direction each door swings.
  • The TV wall and how far the sofa will sit from it.

Then keep three things clear. About 3 ft for walkways, especially to the balcony, since the sliding door in most Hyderabad flats is the most-used opening in the house. Enough room to walk between the sofa and the coffee table without turning sideways. And, for a 55-inch TV, a seated distance of roughly 7 to 9 ft. Our living room design ideas go into layout in more detail.

Here’s the trick that saves the most regret: mark the sofa’s footprint on the floor with masking tape and live with it for three or four days. You’ll know quickly if the chaise blocks the walk to the kitchen.

Plan of a 12 by 16 ft living room with an L shape sofa against the long wall and its chaise on the right as seen from the TV, room to walk past the coffee table, a 3 ft clear walkway to the sliding balcony door and 7 to 9 ft from the seat to the TV, with a key showing left-hand (LAF) and right-hand (RAF) facing chaises
Tape this footprint on your floor before ordering. The chaise side is named standing at the TV, facing the sofa.

Left or right chaise: how to get it right

This is the easiest mistake to make, especially with ready-made sofas ordered online.

Stand facing the spot where the sofa will go, the way you’d look at it from the TV. If the chaise (or the short side of the L) is on your left, it’s left-hand facing, often written LAF. On your right, it’s right-hand facing, or RAF. Some sellers describe it from the sitting position, which flips everything, so insist on a sketch.

Which side should the chaise go? A few rules of thumb:

  • Keep it away from the main walkway and the balcony door.
  • Put it where the person who lounges most will want to sit, usually facing the TV.
  • Avoid placing it right under a west-facing window, where afternoon sun will fade it first.

If you rent or expect to move, a fixed L is a gamble. A modular sectional, or a three-seater with a movable ottoman, can switch sides later.

L shape sofa sizes and seat counts

You’ll see L shapes sold as 5, 6 or 7 seaters. The naming isn’t standard. One maker counts the chaise as two seats, another counts the corner as one. Count usable seats by the cushions, and ask for each cushion’s width.

There are two broad shapes:

TypeWhat it isGood for
L with chaise (lounger)A straight sofa with an extended seat at one endFamily TV rooms; one person stretches out
Corner sectionalTwo straight runs meeting at a corner seatMore upright seats; larger halls and villas
Modular sectionalSeparate modules locked togetherRentals, rearranging, tight lifts

The corner seat of a sectional is the least comfortable place to sit, because knees meet in the middle. Factor that into your seat count.

Seat depth, seat height and back height

Comfort comes down to a few inches. Most sofas have a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches (43 to 48 cm). A seat depth of 20 to 21 inches suits upright sitting and older parents, whose feet should rest flat on the floor. A depth of 23 to 25 inches suits lounging and taller family members.

In a mixed household, go deeper and add loose back cushions. Shorter people use the cushions; taller ones push them aside. For elderly parents, a firmer, slightly higher seat makes standing up much easier on the knees.

Arms, backs and headrests

Arm style eats into seat width more than people expect. Slim track arms free up several inches of seat compared with rolled or padded arms on a sofa of the same overall length, which matters when a wall is only just long enough.

Backs come in two kinds. Loose back cushions can be plumped, turned and refilled, but they slump and need straightening every day. Fixed (tight) backs look neater and need less fussing, though a flat back is harder to fix later. Adjustable headrests, like the ones in the photo above, help taller people watch TV without a cushion wedged behind the neck.

What’s inside matters more than the shape

Frame. Seasoned, termite-treated hardwood for the base rails, seat rails and legs, with BWR-grade plywood for arm boxes and back panels. Frames built entirely from particle board swell and creak after a few monsoons.

Base. Elastic webbing or zig-zag (sinuous) springs carry the foam. Springs feel slightly firmer and bouncier.

Foam. For a seat used daily, ask for 32 to 40 kg/m³, ideally high-resilience (HR) foam, wrapped in polyester fibre. Sheela Foam’s guidance for corner sofas suggests about 35 kg/m³ for the main seat and 28 to 30 for lounging areas; we’d keep the chaise at seat density, since it often takes the most use. Our sofa foam density guide explains how to check what you’re getting.

The joint. L shapes come apart at the corner or between modules. Ask how the sections connect. On smooth vitrified tiles or marble, unconnected modules slowly drift apart and leave a gap.

Fabric for a big sofa near a balcony door

An L shape covers a lot of fabric, often right beside the balcony door where sun and dust come in. Choose a tightly woven polyester, poly-cotton blend or microfibre in a mid-tone that hides dust. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes suggests a Martindale rub count of 20,000 and above for upholstery; for a family L shape we aim for 25,000 or more. Skip PU leatherette; in Hyderabad’s April and May heat it gets sticky, and it tends to crack and peel within a few years. Compare options in our guide to the best sofa fabric for Indian homes.

Zipped, removable cushion covers are worth asking for. They let you air the foam after the monsoon and wash covers when a child gets creative with a sketch pen.

Getting it into your flat

A one-piece L shape rarely fits a residential lift. Before ordering, measure:

  1. The lift door width, and the inside depth and diagonal of the lift car.
  2. The main door width and height.
  3. Corridor turns and any staircase landings.

A custom maker builds the sofa as two or three modules sized to those numbers, then joins them in your living room. Many gated communities also want a service-lift booking or deliveries within fixed hours, so check with your association a few days ahead.

If you already have a solid L shape that’s just tired, new fabric and foam through sofa upholstery is usually quicker than replacing it. And if part of the family wants to recline, our recliner sofa buying guide covers L shapes with reclining ends.

Common L shape mistakes to avoid

  • A chaise that blocks the balcony door or the path to the kitchen.
  • A seat so deep that shorter family members perch on the edge.
  • Light fabric in a west-facing room, or a pile fabric in a dusty, non-AC home.
  • Not measuring the lift until delivery day.
  • Forgetting that a robot vacuum needs a clear gap under the sofa, if you use one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a left or right L shape sofa?

To tell if you need a left or right L shape sofa, stand in the room facing the spot where the sofa's back will go, the way you'd look at it from the TV. If the chaise or the short side of the L should be on your left, it's a left-hand facing (LAF) sofa; if it's on your right, it's right-hand facing (RAF). Some sellers describe the side from the sitting position instead, which flips it, so always confirm with a sketch before ordering.

How much space do you need for an L shape sofa?

An L shape sofa needs the length of both arms of the L along the walls plus clear space around it. Keep about 3 ft for walkways, especially the path to the balcony door, and leave room to walk between the sofa and the coffee table. For a 55-inch TV, most families sit comfortably about 7 to 9 ft from the screen. Mark the sofa's outline on the floor with masking tape for a few days before ordering to check that the room still flows.

What is the best seat depth for an L shape sofa?

The best seat depth for an L shape sofa depends on who uses it. A seat depth of about 20 to 21 inches suits upright sitting and older parents whose feet should rest flat on the floor. A depth of 23 to 25 inches suits lounging and taller family members, and you can add back cushions to make a deep seat usable for shorter people. Most sofas have a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches (43 to 48 cm), with firmer, higher seats easier to get up from.

Is an L shape sofa better than a 3+1+1 sofa set?

An L shape sofa is better than a 3+1+1 set for family TV seating in a living room with a clear corner, because it seats more people along two walls and gives one person room to stretch out on the chaise. A 3+1+1 set is better for formal living rooms, rooms with doors on several walls, and families who move often, because the pieces can be rearranged or split across rooms. In compact 2BHK halls, a three-seater with one chair often leaves the balcony door clearer.

How do you get an L shape sofa into an apartment?

An L shape sofa gets into an apartment by being built in sections that fit the lift and staircase, then joined in the living room. Before ordering, measure the lift door width, the inside depth and diagonal of the lift car, the main door, and any corridor or staircase turns. A custom maker sizes each module to those numbers. Also check if your society requires a service-lift booking or fixed delivery hours, which many Hyderabad gated communities do.

Which fabric is best for an L shape sofa?

The best fabric for an L shape sofa in most Indian homes is a tightly woven polyester, poly-cotton blend or polyester microfibre with a Martindale rub count of 25,000 or more, in a mid-tone colour. L shapes are large, often sit near a balcony door, and get heavy daily use, so sun-fast, dust-resistant fabric matters more than on a single chair. Velvet looks rich but holds dust, and PU leatherette tends to crack and peel in Hyderabad's summer heat.

How long does it take to make a custom L shape sofa?

A custom L shape sofa from Baaft Decor usually takes about three to five weeks from design sign-off, because the frame is built to your measurements, foam is cut to the chosen density and the fabric is stitched for each module. Imported fabric, channel stitching or deep buttoning can add roughly a week. If you're furnishing for a gruhapravesam or a flat handover, mention the date at the free home visit so the fabric order can be planned around it.

Can an L shape sofa be changed from left to right later?

A fixed L shape sofa cannot be changed from left to right later, because the chaise or corner is built into one side of the frame. If you might move house or rearrange the room, choose a modular sectional whose pieces can be swapped, or an L shape with a separate ottoman that sits at either end. For a custom build, decide the orientation on the floor plan of your current home and confirm it on a dimensioned sketch before production starts.
