Blinds are quoted per square foot. The catch is that the rate on that square foot can vary several times over depending on what you pick. When we quote for custom window blinds in Hyderabad, the measured size of each blind is only the starting line. Type, fabric, mechanism, cassette and the wall it’s fixed to are all separate decisions, and that’s where two quotes for “the same blinds” stop being the same.
Below, each cost driver gets its own section, so you can read any blinds quote (ours or anyone else’s) line by line. If you haven’t settled which blind goes on which window yet, our window blinds buying guide for Hyderabad homes covers that first; come back here once you have a rough list.
How is the cost of window blinds calculated?
Blind cost is the finished blind area multiplied by the rate for the type and fabric, plus extras. Step by step:
- Measure the blind, not the glass. An outside-mount blind usually runs a few inches past the window on each side and above the frame, so it covers light gaps.
- Convert to square feet. Width × drop, in feet, rounded up to the supplier’s increment.
- Apply the minimum. Many suppliers set a minimum billable area per blind, so small windows are charged at that minimum.
- Multiply by the rate for the blind type and fabric collection.
- Add extras. Cassette or fascia, side channels, motor, special brackets, installation and GST.
Take a typical bedroom window in a Hyderabad flat: 5 ft wide, 4 ft tall, RCC lintel above. Mounted outside the recess, the blind might be about 5.5 ft wide with a 4.5 ft drop. That’s roughly 25 sq ft before any extras. Fit the same window inside the recess and the blind is smaller (and cheaper), but you’ll see thin lines of light down both edges every morning.
Blind type: the first big price step
The type of blind sets the base rate. This is how the common types compare against each other in the quotes we prepare:
| Blind type | Relative cost | Why it costs what it does | Where it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roller (polyester) | Lower | Single fabric layer, simple tube and chain | Bedrooms, kitchens, study, rentals |
| PVC or bamboo chick | Lower | Basic material, simple roll-up cord | Balconies, sit-outs, utility areas |
| Vertical | Lower to mid | Many vanes and a traversing track | Wide windows, sliding doors |
| Aluminium venetian | Lower to mid | Metal slats and a tilt mechanism | Kitchens, bathrooms |
| Zebra (dual) | Mid | Double fabric layer, precise alignment | Living rooms, dining, bedrooms |
| Roman | Mid to higher | Tailored fabric, folding mechanism, optional lining | Living rooms, bedrooms |
| Honeycomb (cellular) | Higher | Specialised pleated cell fabric | West-facing bedrooms |
| Wooden venetian | Higher | Real timber slats, heavy headrail | Living rooms, studies |
If you’re still deciding between types, our guide to the types of window blinds explains what each one does well and badly.
Balconies are priced differently again. An outdoor blind takes rain, wind and full sun, so it needs weather-rated fabric or PVC, a heavier bottom bar and usually tie-down hooks or side cables. Those parts are why an outdoor roller costs more than an indoor roller of the same size. Simple PVC or bamboo chicks are the low-cost exception. Our balcony blinds service explains the outdoor options, and the comparison of the best blinds for a balcony shows which one suits sun, rain or wind.
Fabric grade within the same type
Two roller blinds of identical size can differ a lot in price on fabric alone.
- Plain dim-out polyester filters light and gives day privacy. This is usually the entry fabric.
- Blackout fabric has a coating or a dense weave that stops nearly all light. It costs more and is what most people want in bedrooms.
- Sunscreen fabric is a technical weave sold by openness factor (1%, 3%, 5% and so on). It cuts glare and heat while keeping a view out, and it sits in the middle to upper range.
- Textured, linen-look and jacquard collections carry a premium for the look.
Colour rarely changes the rate; the collection does. Ask for the fabric name or code on the quote, otherwise you can’t compare two quotes like with like.
Operating mechanism: chain, spring or motor
Most blinds in Indian homes run on a bead chain. It’s the standard and the cheapest. Spring-loaded cordless blinds cost a little more and suit children’s rooms, because there’s no loop to reach. If you keep a chain, a tensioner that fixes the loop to the wall is a small extra worth paying for; the US product safety regulator explains why in its guidance on corded window coverings.
Motors are the single biggest jump in a blind’s cost. You pay for the motor in each blind, a remote or smart hub, and often an electrician to bring power near the window. Rechargeable battery motors avoid wiring but still cost more than a chain. Our motorised curtains and blinds service covers which windows actually justify a motor.
Cassette, side channels and finishing
People tend to skim past these lines on a quote, then wish they hadn’t:
- Open roll vs cassette. An open roll shows the fabric wrapped on the tube. A cassette or fascia hides it, looks neater and keeps construction dust off the roll. It adds to the cost.
- Side channels. For true blackout, side channels close the light gaps at the edges. They cost extra per running foot.
- Double roller brackets. A sunscreen and a blackout roller on one bracket gives day and night control. Two blinds, two costs.
- Bottom rail style. Exposed aluminium rails are standard; fabric-wrapped or weighted rails cost a little more.
Window size, splitting and mounting
Very wide windows can’t always take one blind. Fabric comes in fixed roll widths, long tubes sag in the middle, and a heavy blind is hard work on a chain. So a 12 ft living room window is often split into two or three blinds, and each carries its own brackets and mechanism. That’s more hardware than one big blind, and it shows on the quote.
The mounting surface matters too. RCC beams above windows, common in Hyderabad apartments, take longer to drill. Many newer gated-community towers use AAC blocks, which need anchors made for them or the brackets work loose. A gypsum false ceiling can’t hold a blind on its own, so the bracket has to reach the slab or a backing strip. And we avoid drilling into uPVC window frames where we can; a cracked profile costs far more to fix than the blind did.
Why do zebra blinds cost more per square foot?
Two reasons. You’re buying roughly twice the fabric, because it runs down the front of the tube and back up behind it. And the tube has to sit dead level, or the stripes never line up. Zebra still costs less than wooden or motorised blinds. If you’re torn between the two, read our zebra vs roller blinds comparison before paying the difference.
What should a blinds quote include?
A fair quote lists each blind separately:
- Room and window name, with finished width and drop
- Blind type and fabric collection or code
- Mount type (inside or outside the recess)
- Mechanism: chain, spring or motor, and control type
- Cassette, side channels or other extras
- Minimum billable area, if it applies
- Installation and any extra work (old rod removal, filling holes)
- GST, shown clearly
- Timeline from order to fitting
If a quote just says “blinds for full flat, 1 lot”, ask for the breakdown. You can’t check what you can’t see.
How to save on blinds without regretting it
- Match the fabric to the room. Blackout in bedrooms, dim-out or sunscreen elsewhere. Living rooms rarely need full blackout, so don’t pay for it there.
- Motorise selectively. One motor on the big living room window, chains everywhere else.
- Group small windows. Ask whether adjacent small windows can share one wider blind to avoid paying the minimum twice.
- Do every room in one visit. One measuring trip and one fitting day costs less than three separate jobs.
- Don’t skip the cassette on dusty sites. In a new flat with construction still going on around it, an open roll collects grime fast.

Frequently asked questions
How much do window blinds cost in Hyderabad?
Window blinds in Hyderabad are usually priced per square foot of finished blind, so the cost of each blind is its measured area multiplied by the rate for the chosen type and fabric. A plain polyester roller blind sits at the lower end, zebra and roman blinds in the middle, and real wooden, honeycomb and motorised blinds at the top. Cassettes, side channels, motors and difficult installation add to it. Every window is a different size, so an honest quote needs measurement first. Baaft Decor measures for free at your home and gives a written, itemised quote.
How much do zebra blinds cost per square foot, and are they expensive?
Zebra blinds usually cost more per square foot than a basic polyester roller blind, because the fabric is a double layer of alternating sheer and solid bands and the tube and brackets must hold that extra weight perfectly level. They generally cost less than real wooden blinds, honeycomb blinds or any motorised blind. Within zebra blinds, the rate changes with the fabric collection (plain, textured, blackout-band or linen-look), the width, and whether there's a cassette cover. Ask for the per-square-foot rate and the minimum billable area in writing.
Which type of window blind is the most expensive?
Among common window blinds, real wooden venetian blinds, honeycomb (cellular) blinds and motorised blinds of any type tend to be the most expensive. Wood costs more as a raw material and its slats are heavy, honeycomb fabric is a specialised pleated cell construction, and motors add a separate hardware cost per blind plus any wiring. Lined roman blinds can also cost more than you expect because they involve tailoring. The most affordable options are usually plain polyester roller blinds, PVC or bamboo chick blinds and basic vertical blinds.
How much do blinds cost for a whole room or a full flat?
The cost of blinds for a room or a flat is the sum of every individual blind, so it depends on how many windows you have, their sizes, and which type you choose for each room. A typical Hyderabad 2BHK or 3BHK has a large living room sliding door, bedroom windows, a kitchen window and sometimes a utility or balcony opening, each of which may suit a different blind. Mixing types by room keeps the total sensible. We measure every window in one visit and give a room-by-room written quote.
Is installation included in the price of blinds?
Installation is included in some blinds prices and not in others, so confirm it in writing. Many custom-blind quotes include fitting; others add it as a separate line or charge extra for difficult work. Installation costs more when brackets go into RCC beams, AAC blocks needing special anchors, gypsum false ceilings without backing, or double-height windows that need tall ladders. At Baaft Decor, fitting is shown clearly on the written quote, along with any extra work such as removing old curtain rods and filling holes.
Do motorised blinds cost much more than manual blinds?
Motorised blinds cost noticeably more than manual blinds because each blind needs its own motor, plus a remote, wall switch or smart hub, and often an electrician to bring a power point near the window. Rechargeable battery motors avoid new wiring but still cost more than a chain mechanism. The fabric cost stays roughly the same. Motors make the most sense for tall or wide windows, windows behind beds or sofas, and high-rise living rooms where several large blinds are opened and closed every day.
Why does a small window blind not cost proportionally less?
A small window blind does not cost proportionally less because many suppliers set a minimum billable area per blind, and the fixed parts of every blind (brackets, chain, end caps, bottom rail and fitting time) cost the same whether the window is two feet wide or six. So a narrow bathroom or kitchen window can work out more expensive per square foot than a large bedroom window. Ask any supplier what their minimum billable area is before comparing quotes, because it changes the total for homes with several small windows.
Is GST included in a window blinds quote?
Some window blinds quotes include GST in the rates and others add it at the bottom, so it's one of the first things to check. The difference can change the final amount noticeably. A fair quote shows the tax as a separate, visible line along with each blind's size, type, fabric, mechanism and installation. If two quotes look far apart, check whether one includes GST and the other does not before deciding.
